Editorials: The Headies 2018 Came Back With a Bang & It is Different From How we Know It Be

The Headies 2018

The Headies 2018 Review

On Saturday, May 5, 2018, the biggest entertainment award known as the Headies took place at Eko Hotel & Suites. This is its 12th edition and we thank God this is by far, better than those held in recent years which are terribly sloopy. In terms of co-ordination, organisation, punctuality, and stage setting, the Headies, thankfully, recorded growth. It was hosted by the comdedian Bovi and the beautiful single Seyi Shay. I do not understand what they both had on their bodies, cause I mean, what are those? Fashion? No way!

Well this year’s Headies was different, a good different sort of because of so many things. For once they actually started out quite early, no African time. The event was scheduled at 10pm and punctuality was their motto for this year. Bovi and Seyi Shey were fun on the stage, minimal banter without trying to get the audience bored. No meaningless jokes nor elongated speeches.
There was a live band! No room for lip syncing which we know most artists do these days (No pointing of hands here, but we know).
Falz, Mr Real, Simi as well as Mad Melon and Mountain black gave amazing performances. The stage and sound were perfect and i mean this Headies was properly planned!

Notable winners from this year are Davido, Simi and Reminisce. Davido won 4 awards, Simi had three plaques to her name while The Alaga Ibile, Reminsince won the best rap album after saying he had been searching for it for a very long time. We’re glad he has been finally recognized.

Though the organizers did a good job this year, some of the nominees didn’t do their part. Most of them came late and as for some who even won, they didn’t come to the stage to collect their plaques. The likes of Small Doctor, Simi, Yemi Alade, Kiddominant, Tiwa Savage, 2baba, Nas-ty C, and Wizkid were a no-show for various reasons when called upon.
Someone like Tiwa Savage actually stopped mid performance to give a speech about her award which she wasn’t there to collect. Talk about disorderliness at its highest peak. She didn’t even stop there and even with all that has been going on about Codeine Abuse in Nigeria, one would have thought she would stay off the song ‘Diet’. Oh but no she went on to sing it in her set. Her PR needs to do better as that has sent a bad message of encouraging drug abuse.

Our daddy yo father WiziKd, himself was a no-show afTer he won 2 solo awards an a collabo with Tiwa Savage. It feels like Wizkid is not taking this music business seriously as this is the second important event he is missing this year.

My grievances this year is towards Runtown and Olamide. If you didn’t hear Mad Over You anywhere you turned then you probably were living underneath a rock. Despite all their handwork and effort in the year in review, they did not bag home one single award. Think back to every smash hit they have all dropped, don’t you think they deserve one, at least one? I stand firmly saying they were cheated and deserved better.

In other news, you must have seen the Nollywood Elder stateman Richard Mofe Damejo doing the galala, it was totally fun to watch. Mr Assurance, Davido dedicated his award to his girl-friend Chioma (exhausting!). The DMW crew did not allow Mayorkun breath after he won the Next Rated Act Category! Love the energy, love the vibe, if you really want to succed, then have great people around you. Although he couldn’t give a speech and was even supposed to perform after winning an award. Timing????

Bovi called out Timaya on stage dissing his outfit and the singer hopped on stage like Kanye West had done wearing a bathrobe and flip-flops. Despite not being called for an award- receiving purpose, Timaya seized the microphone, again like Kanye, and thanked his fans for supporting him for 13 years. Our very own Igwe 2Pac and his very efficient hypeman did their thing on stage. It was great to see the viral sensation doing his thing live.
Although the most prestigious music award in Nigeria is not yet where it should be, it appears to be on its way there, a step at once.
